Errant Child: an excerpt

[Backstory: the protagonist, Yeden, is attempting to locate the offices of MedVail, a company against which he has reason to hold a grudge. Their offices are located in a a subterranean retail complex in Vail, CO, where the external scenery is projected seamlessly onto the interior of the building]

MedVail's office was one level up from the entrance. He took the long route, walking up the gentle, curved slope of the central corridor, enjoying the curious visual effect as the view flowed around various shop entrances. In one store window, hiking boots appeared to float just above the treeline. In another, the shopkeeper had arranged umbrellas vertically so that they seemed to open above the valley, shielding it from rain. The illusion was perfect; if not for the guide rail along the wall, he might easily have wandered into a display case.

Arriving at the correct office number, he stepped through an open doorway, once again marveling at the optical effect: from the outside, the doorframe appeared to be a freestanding structure, supported only by the path upon which he walked. As he approached, it became obvious that there was a room on the other side of the doorway; stepping through, he glanced back at a very solid oak-paneled wall, to which the doorframe was affixed. Now that he was out of the main corridor, the building's actual structure was visible again. Truth be told, it was almost as pretty as the view: the walls were real wood -- probably vat-grown, but still genetically akin to any oak found in nature -- and polished brass light fixtures adorned the ceiling.

Steeling himself for a confrontation, he turned his attention to the desk.

"Hello, I'd like to speak with..." he cut himself off. Behind the young woman at the desk, a pristine white gown was artfully arranged in a demure pose. Next to it, a tuxedo stood ready, proffering an elbow to the gown's nonexistent inhabitant. The desk was transparent on top and in front, and an array of rings floated inside, constantly shifting position. A silver loop with a carved diamond dragon floated into view, glinting perfectly in the light. Hovering for a moment, it wandered aside so that a ruby could move forward: it had no setting, and was clearly designed to affix itself directly to the wearer's finger.

Cold fear trickled down Yeden's spine: he was in a bridal shop.
